The Real Texas Hill Country

The Real Texas Hill Country

Nathan and I just celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary.  We actually got to get away for the weekend!  It is easy to forget what it is like without children.  Hey, I love my boys, but I must say that I loved having no responsibility for the few days that I had free.

We left our boys with my mom and dad and headed off to the Texas hill country.  Boy, do I mean hill country.  I have never seen this kind of land here in Texas and I was so glad that I got to experience it.  It was beautiful.  The last decent town that we saw was Kerrville.  That was a good 35 miles from our destination.

We finally made it to our little cabin in the boondocks.  A friend of mine recommended this place to me.  It is called The Lodges at Lost Maples.  It is set very close to the Lost Maples Natural Area.  The place is really cute and a true cabin of sorts.  It was one big open room with a bed, kitchen, living room and jacuzzi.  It was the Sweetheart cabin.  Hey, it was our 10 year anniversary.  We laid in a nice hammock in the trees and watched the sun set.  After all, there was not much else to do around here.  By the way, we had no cell phone service and the sweet little cabin had no phones.  Thank goodness I left my kids with someone I trusted completely!!!

We did hit the two rivers that were close.  One was the Sabinal River and the other was the Frio.  The Frio was our favorite by far.  It was cooler therefore the algae stuff was not so abundant like it was in the Sabinal.  Nathan actually got me out there wading in the river to fish.  I mostly took pictures, but I managed to catch some sweet bass.  It is always fun to catch a fish.  It gets you nice and pumped for more, but they do not always come so easily. It usually seems like a lifetime before the next one even comes along. That part was pretty fun, but I preferred taking pictures over the fishing.

If you live in Texas, I urge you to come and see this part of Texas.  It is absolutely gorgeous.  If you and your honey have not gotten away in a while, just go here for a short trip. Make sure you are up for the windy roads and total seclusion. We passed by a truck pulled over with a very sick passenger, if you know what I mean.

I’m not sure I know what you mean and, actually, I’m not sure I want to know what you mean.

Congratulations! It’s always a good habit to remember that you’re husband and wife, not just mom and dad!

1/10/11 Can you believe I just found your pictures of the Hill Country trip. We have always loved the Hill Country, we usually go to Fredicksburg, that is a neat German town. I love to eat at MaMacita’s mexican resturant. There is a great State park there (lady Bird Johnson), and a great golf course. We have played the course several times (in the past years) there is also a camp ground for RVs. Lots of tourist, that the only drawback, if you want peaceful. Love your website. I love you ALL Jadie
